That moment took her breath away. She heard a confession on the phone that changed everything she thought she knew. The words were like a knife cutting through the peacefulness and leaving her with a lot of doubts. Then there was silence. It was thick and heavy. It felt louder than any loud noise. The silence was really loud louder, than someone screaming. It just stayed there.

The house was really quiet on that Saturday after twelve o’clock. The sunlight was shining into the kitchen where Rachel was standing by the counter. She had bags sitting next, to her. Marcus said “Do not call me ” His voice was very quiet. You could tell he was really worried. “My wife is at home” he said. “I told you we have to be more careful, with the phone calls.” Marcus said “My wife is home” and he did not want her to know what was going on. Marcus wanted them to be careful so they would not get caught.
Rachels breath caught in her throat. The basket was really pressing into her hands it was so hard that it would probably leave marks on her palms. Rachel was holding the basket tightly.
A sound cut through the silence. Someone was speaking fast and loud. The womans tone did not hide how upset the woman was. This sound reached Rachel where Rachel stood near the wall. Rachel was close enough to catch every word that the woman said.
The woman was really upset. “Then stop pretending you are loyal to her” she shouted at Marcus. I am so tired of being your secret, Marcus. You told me you were going to tell her about us, Marcus. You said you would leave her for me, Marcus. So when Marcus are you going to stop lying to both of us to her and, to me?
The basket fell down. Rachels fingers were not fast enough to grab it. She stopped breathing for a moment as her socks and shirts went over the floor. The colors of her clothes were hard to see because of the light, in the hallway. Rachel saw her clothes scattered everywhere the socks and shirts were all mixed up.
Marcus was having an affair with someone. The thing is, Marcus was not being very careful, about this affair. People were starting to find out about Marcus and his affair. Marcus was worried that everyone would know about Marcus and the affair he was having.
The same thoughts just kept going in my head. They did this over and over. Every time they came back the thoughts felt heavier. It was getting harder to ignore the thoughts about things. The thoughts, about things just would not go away.
“Please keep your voice down ” Marcus said into the phone in a voice. “I will tell Rachel. I just need a little time. Rachel does not suspect anything, about this. I just need to find the moment to talk to Rachel about it.
A weight broke loose in Rachels chest. She had been married for eight years. Every morning Rachel and her husband did things together they made promises to each other. The Moment of Truth
Marcus was spinning around fast and then he turned. All the red color was going away, from his face. He put the phone down. It fell hard on the wooden table. The woman was talking from far away. She said one thing before she stopped because she realized it was quiet and Marcus was not answering her. The woman kept waiting for Marcus to say something. Marcus was not talking to the woman.
Marcus I am trying to find out what is going on. Is Marcus even listening to me? What is happening to Marcus?
A shadow fell across the carpet when Rachel walked in. The phone was sitting on Marcuss desk. It was just waiting there. Rachels fingers wrapped around the phone. She did not wait to see who was calling. When she looked at the display all she saw were numbers. There was no name to tell her who it was. The phone just showed digits. Rachel knew that Marcus did not use names on his phone. Names could be a problem. Marcus knew that better, than anyone. He knew that using names was not an idea. The phone just showed the numbers of the person who was calling Marcus.
Rachel said into the phone “He is not able to talk now.” She sounded really calm which was of strange. “His wife just found out his secret ” Rachel said.
The moment she hung up the phone her fingers let go. The phone rested on the wooden table. The phone sat there it was still buzzing a little. It was sitting in the space, between her chair and the other chair.
Marcus just stood there for a long time his jaw moving around like a fish that is not in the water. The color of his skin changed a lot. At first he looked really surprised and pale then he looked scared and tight. After that his face got red like someone who got caught doing something bad. What happened after that was really sharp: Marcuss eyes got smaller. His thoughts were running really fast trying to find a way out of this problem trying to think of something he could tell her before everything fell apart. Marcus was thinking about what he could say to her something that would make her not be angry, with him something that would make her not know what Marcus had done.
Rachel this is not what you think it is. You are not getting the point. He finally said this. His words were not very steady.
For how had she been standing right there? That question came out really sharp it was full of fear like the fact that she had just heard him was worse, than what he did. She was really scared that she had heard him it seemed like that was the problem, not what he did but that she knew about it now.
Rachel felt a shiver go through her body when her eyes met his. This was the face of the person she had chosen to be with. She had leaned on him for a time and they had shared many years together.. “Stop ” Rachel said, cutting him off her voice was sharp. Do not lie to me now that is really insulting. I heard the thing, Marcus. You told her that you would leave me Marcus. You said that I do not suspect anything, Marcus. You were talking about how to end our marriage, Marcus.
Marcuss face fell apart. “Rachel please let me tell you what is going on. “
Rachel spoke quietly and it felt kind of sharp. I wondered how much time had actually passed.
“What?”
How long have you been having an affair with someone ? You have been married to my friend for a long time. I want to know how long you have been cheating on my friend. Have you been seeing this person for a few months or has the affair with this person been going on for years? I think my friend deserves to know the truth, about your affair.
There was an uncomfortable silence between Marcus and the other person. It was like you could feel it. Marcus stopped talking for a moment. Rachel noticed something. For six months every time I went back to Rachel there was something I did not know. This period of time was full of lies and trickery one secret after another. He thought the affair was more important than his marriage to Diane. Now Diane is saying that she will not pretend that this affair did not happen. The eight years of marriage are being thrown away because of his affair.

He had been sleeping on a couch at a friends house while he waited. He was holding flowers and a letter that was just for Rachel to read. He looked really hopeful as he took a step forward. Marcus I have been thinking about our marriage for two weeks. That is all I have been thinking about.. You know what I figured out? I have not been happy in our marriage for a long time. I just did not want to admit it to myself. Our marriage has been on my mind and I have to be honest with you Marcus I have been unhappy, in our marriage.
She was breathing out slowly. Her mind was going over a lot of ideas that she had been thinking about for really long days. Breathing out slowly like that was helping her to think about all these ideas. The ideas had been on her mind, for days now.
I have been feeling this way for a time now maybe even more than a year. The conversations that really mattered have stopped happening one after another. The feeling of being close, to you has disappeared it just slowly went away. Our lives have been going on at the time but it has been like we are strangers living in the same house just doing what we are supposed to do. I told myself that it is normal for couples to drift apart sometimes.. The truth is that you had already checked out and I was just pretending like everything was okay even though I was really just alone.
Her words came out fast before Marcus could even say anything. He tried to talk he opened his mouth. Her words just kept going and he got cut off again.
