Don’t Call Me Here, My Wife Is Home’—Then She Stepped Into the Room

That moment took her breath away. She heard a confession on the phone that changed everything she thought she knew. The words were like a knife cutting through the peacefulness and leaving her with a lot of doubts. Then there was silence. It was thick and heavy. It felt louder than any loud noise. The silence was really loud louder, than someone screaming. It just stayed there.

The Conversation That Caused Them To Go Their Separate Ways

The house was really quiet on that Saturday after twelve o’clock. The sunlight was shining into the kitchen where Rachel was standing by the counter. She had bags sitting next, to her. Rachel had lived in this house with Marcus for eight years now. She was putting food away like cartons and cans from the paper bags into the shelves one thing at a time. Rachel and Marcus were not talking to each other they were just doing things like putting groceries away.

Marcus was focused on writing his replies. He stayed in his study with the door shut. He had told Rachel that she should not bother him until he came out. Marcus said that coffee could wait and Rachel should just leave him alone for now.

That was fine by her on that Saturday morning. Usually weekends were the time when Marcus would be typing away on his computer. He worked at a marketing consultancy, which meant he could get calls at any time. She had gotten used to it over time. There were times when he had to leave or when they had dinner very late. Sometimes Marcus would be sitting across from her but he would seem like he was very far away. Marcus was, like that because of his job. She knew that about Marcus.

Halfway up the stairs with the laundry tucked under one arm Rachel slowed down when she walked by the hall to his room. She heard a sound coming from, behind the cracked door. It was not the way he talked on the phone. This sound was softer. It sounded like someone was holding their breath while asking for something that the laundry and the stairs and everything else did not matter because they needed it much. Rachel thought about the sound. It made her think about him and what he was doing in his room and what the sound meant for him.

Out in the hall out of sight she told herself that she was not listening on purpose, to the conversation. It was just that her mind was checking to see what was going on. That is all. The conversation was going on without her. A pause held her there.

The words that came after that really changed everything she thought she knew about her life with him. She had a lot of ideas about what her life was like with him. The words that followed made her question all of that. Her life with him was not what she thought it was and the words that came after that made her see things differently. The words that followed broke her heart. Made her think about her life with him, in a whole new way.

The Phone Call

Marcus said “Do not call me ” His voice was very quiet. You could tell he was really worried. “My wife is at home” he said. “I told you we have to be more careful, with the phone calls.” Marcus said “My wife is home” and he did not want her to know what was going on. Marcus wanted them to be careful so they would not get caught.

Rachels breath caught in her throat. The basket was really pressing into her hands it was so hard that it would probably leave marks on her palms. Rachel was holding the basket tightly.

A sound cut through the silence. Someone was speaking fast and loud. The womans tone did not hide how upset the woman was. This sound reached Rachel where Rachel stood near the wall. Rachel was close enough to catch every word that the woman said.

The woman was really upset. “Then stop pretending you are loyal to her” she shouted at Marcus. I am so tired of being your secret, Marcus. You told me you were going to tell her about us, Marcus. You said you would leave her for me, Marcus. So when Marcus are you going to stop lying to both of us to her and, to me?

The basket fell down. Rachels fingers were not fast enough to grab it. She stopped breathing for a moment as her socks and shirts went over the floor. The colors of her clothes were hard to see because of the light, in the hallway. Rachel saw her clothes scattered everywhere the socks and shirts were all mixed up.

Marcus was having an affair with someone. The thing is, Marcus was not being very careful, about this affair. People were starting to find out about Marcus and his affair. Marcus was worried that everyone would know about Marcus and the affair he was having.

The same thoughts just kept going in my head. They did this over and over. Every time they came back the thoughts felt heavier. It was getting harder to ignore the thoughts about things. The thoughts, about things just would not go away.

“Please keep your voice down ” Marcus said into the phone in a voice. “I will tell Rachel. I just need a little time. Rachel does not suspect anything, about this. I just need to find the moment to talk to Rachel about it.

A weight broke loose in Rachels chest. She had been married for eight years. Every morning Rachel and her husband did things together they made promises to each other. They tried to make their marriage work. Rachel showed up every day she did her part to make the marriage last.. The whole time her husband was waiting for the right moment to ruin everything. He was talking to another woman telling her that Rachel would never suspect a thing that Rachel would never see it coming. Rachels husband was planning to hurt her. He was doing it behind her back while Rachel was still trying to make the marriage work.

Rachel walked into the room. Her footsteps were quiet on the thick carpet. She stood in the doorway. Behind her Marcus was still, on the phone. He did not turn around. He just kept talking to the person on the end of the line. Marcus did not look at Rachel. He did not even act like he knew Rachel was there. Rachel was standing behind him but Marcus did not give her any attention.

Rachel thought about this. She figured out what he does really well is act. She said this in a voice even though she felt really upset inside and her feelings were all, over the place.

The Moment of Truth

Marcus was spinning around fast and then he turned. All the red color was going away, from his face. He put the phone down. It fell hard on the wooden table. The woman was talking from far away. She said one thing before she stopped because she realized it was quiet and Marcus was not answering her. The woman kept waiting for Marcus to say something. Marcus was not talking to the woman.

Marcus I am trying to find out what is going on. Is Marcus even listening to me? What is happening to Marcus?

A shadow fell across the carpet when Rachel walked in. The phone was sitting on Marcuss desk. It was just waiting there. Rachels fingers wrapped around the phone. She did not wait to see who was calling. When she looked at the display all she saw were numbers. There was no name to tell her who it was. The phone just showed digits. Rachel knew that Marcus did not use names on his phone. Names could be a problem. Marcus knew that better, than anyone. He knew that using names was not an idea. The phone just showed the numbers of the person who was calling Marcus.

Rachel said into the phone “He is not able to talk now.” She sounded really calm which was of strange. “His wife just found out his secret ” Rachel said.

The moment she hung up the phone her fingers let go. The phone rested on the wooden table. The phone sat there it was still buzzing a little. It was sitting in the space, between her chair and the other chair.

Marcus just stood there for a long time his jaw moving around like a fish that is not in the water. The color of his skin changed a lot. At first he looked really surprised and pale then he looked scared and tight. After that his face got red like someone who got caught doing something bad. What happened after that was really sharp: Marcuss eyes got smaller. His thoughts were running really fast trying to find a way out of this problem trying to think of something he could tell her before everything fell apart. Marcus was thinking about what he could say to her something that would make her not be angry, with him something that would make her not know what Marcus had done.

Rachel this is not what you think it is. You are not getting the point. He finally said this. His words were not very steady.

For how had she been standing right there? That question came out really sharp it was full of fear like the fact that she had just heard him was worse, than what he did. She was really scared that she had heard him it seemed like that was the problem, not what he did but that she knew about it now.

Rachel felt a shiver go through her body when her eyes met his. This was the face of the person she had chosen to be with. She had leaned on him for a time and they had shared many years together.. Now she felt cold inside where she used to feel warm. The face of the person she had chosen was still, in front of her.

She said that was enough. Then she spoke louder. “I heard you call me oblivious. I heard you promise her you would leave me. I heard you. That is long enough for marriage problems like these the marriage problems, with you to stop me from believing you and the things you say about our marriage and you.”

The Eight Years Before

Fate brought Rachel and Marcus together when they were in college. They both wanted to get a degree in communications. As time went on they started to feel comfortable with each other. Things just fell into place. They were together steadily without any problems. When Rachel and Marcus were twenty-five years old they got. Put rings on each others fingers in front of their friends. Three years after that Rachel and Marcus got the keys to their home and they were excited to start their life together. The wood floors, in their home creaked under all the boxes that were still not fully unpacked. Rachel and Marcus would sometimes talk about having babies. They never made any big plans they just said maybe they would have babies next year.

That moment made Rachel notice the things that had been there along the things that Rachel skipped right past or decided not to see. Rachel realized that she had been ignoring these things for long. The things that Rachel had been skipping over were now very clear, to Rachel.

Those work trips are really adding up. The times are always changing like it does not matter. His appearance started to become very important. He got clothes started going to the gym and wearing scents that she did not recognize. That phone of his is now locked all the time. He has a secret code that he says is necessary. There are moments now where they used to talk a lot and these quiet moments are happening so slowly that she barely even noticed them at first. The work trips are still. His new appearance is still something she is getting used to.

It made sense to her. Things changed between them over time. Life got busy with things that needed to be done. The excitement of being young was not there anymore. Now she felt warm and happy in ways. Life was still good it was just different. The warmth she felt for him was still there it was just not the same, as when they were young.

In that room the sound of his breaths was really loud as he tried to come up with something to say to make things better.. It was clear that nothing could fix what was broken. This moment made her realize that she had not been getting better she had just been feeling empty inside. It was a feeling that had been growing for a time getting bigger every day. She had been telling herself that everything was fine. That was not true. The emptiness was something that she had been living with. It was getting worse.

The excuses are starting now. This is where people begin to make excuses. The excuses will keep coming from the people who make them the excuses will not stop. The people who make excuses will keep on making the excuses.

Marcus said “It is not what you think”. This is what people usually say when they get caught doing something. “This woman is not thinking clearly” Marcus said. “She is a client who thinks of me in a way that she should not. I have been trying to tell her that I am not interested in her, without making her angry and losing her business.

“Stop ” Rachel said, cutting him off her voice was sharp. Do not lie to me now that is really insulting. I heard the thing, Marcus. You told her that you would leave me Marcus. You said that I do not suspect anything, Marcus. You were talking about how to end our marriage, Marcus.

Marcuss face fell apart. “Rachel please let me tell you what is going on. “

Rachel spoke quietly and it felt kind of sharp. I wondered how much time had actually passed.

“What?”

How long have you been having an affair with someone ? You have been married to my friend for a long time. I want to know how long you have been cheating on my friend. Have you been seeing this person for a few months or has the affair with this person been going on for years? I think my friend deserves to know the truth, about your affair.

There was an uncomfortable silence between Marcus and the other person. It was like you could feel it. Marcus stopped talking for a moment. Rachel noticed something. A change in the way Marcus looked at her. It was like the thoughts in his mind were moving around of, like dust that floats in the air when sunlight comes in.

“Rachel said do not lie to her at this moment ” Rachel warned. “How long is what Rachel is asking about now.”

Marcus said in a voice “It was six months.”. That really did not mean anything to him. It was something that should not have happened. He thought it was a mistake. Marcus was going to stop seeing her. Marcus loves Rachel. He has always loved Rachel.

For six months every time I went back to Rachel there was something I did not know. This period of time was full of lies and trickery one secret after another. When we greeted each other with a kiss it felt real. It was all based on things that were not true. We would have meals together. Talk about things that did not really matter. Most nights we spent together were silent.. The whole time I was with Rachel but it felt like I was, with someone else entirely.

Rachel laughed,. It was not a happy laugh. “You really love me?” she said. You do not cheat on the people you love for six months. The people you love you do not make plans to leave them.. You definitely do not call the people you love stupid which is what you did when you called me oblivious while you were sneaking around with your mistress.

Mistakes happen he said as he moved closer to her. This was a situation yes it was.. Couples often find a way to work things out. Talking things over can help people like Rachel and him. He stood there wanting Rachel to see things from his point of view. He told Rachel that he would do anything he could to make things right. He asked Rachel to stop what she was doing because Rachel would lose everything they had built together, over eight years and that would be a shame all because of one mistake that Rachel was holding against him one single error.

Her fingers. She froze his steps right in the middle of him coming towards her.

Marcus this is not one mistake. This is, about the thousands of choices you made over the last six months. I am talking about every lie you told. I am talking about every meeting you had. I am talking about every text message you sent. I am talking about every time you came home. You pretended that everything was normal. Those things you did Marcus were not mistakes. The lies and the secret meetings and the text messages and the pretending, Marcus those were all choices that you made.

The Quiet After Being Let Down

Right after she found out Rachel went through her days like she was half asleep. She did not talk to Marcus all she and her sister ignored all his calls and texts they just did not answer any of them. Rachel only talked to the people she trusted like her family and then a few of her friends and every time she told them the truth it felt heavier and heavier for Rachel.

Fifty messages showed up on her phone. These messages said things like sorry it was not my fault and I will do better time. Some of them even asked Rachel to give them another chance. They all said please try. Rachel looked at every word. She did not type anything back to these messages. The messages from her phone just kept saying things like I regret what I did. I promise to be better. Rachel still did not type anything back, to the messages.

Now here comes a voice from the past. Friends, relatives telling Rachel to slow down. They think she should talk to someone about this that it might help her. Taking a moment to think before making a decision could be really important more than Rachel thinks. Rachel and her husband have been together, for eight years and that is a time it has brought them close together. Marriage is a responsibility one person told her. People make mistakes that is just what happens. But who just gives up on their marriage because of a mistake. Nobody said that. It was something that everyone was thinking anyway.

That is funny Diane saw it in a way. Rachels sister never did agree with her.

Diane said this in a firm voice. She told him that he is not throwing away eight years. The problem is that he threw away those eight years when he chose to have an affair. He thought the affair was more important than his marriage to Diane. Now Diane is saying that she will not pretend that this affair did not happen. Diane is refusing to act like everything is okay when it is not. The affair. Diane will not forget about it. Diane wants him to know that his affair is the reason why their marriage’s, in trouble. The eight years of marriage are being thrown away because of his affair.

Rachel had a thought that changed her view of things. It was not Marcus himself. The things he did that messed everything up a long time ago. Now that Rachel is looking at the facts it does not feel like she is blaming anyone it just feels clear. So what happens now? That is up, to Rachel to decide.

At first Rachel was not sure what to do. She talked to a lawyer. That helped her understand things a little better. The lawyer explained her rights to her one thing, at a time. Then Rachel started to see that she had some choices. But the more she thought about it the complicated it got. There were a lot of details to consider. Then something unexpected happened. Rachel thought about going. The question of going kept bothering her. Rachel thought about going a lot.

Forgiveness might come later Rachel figured. It is even possible that it will happen. Trust is a thing though. That is a thing for Rachel. Marcus broke the trust that was between them. It was a thing but it was important. Rachel does not know if she can fix it. Marcus had broken something between them and now Rachel is not sure where to start to fix the trust, between her and Marcus.

When you break someones trust it is a deal. You have to work hard to fix it. The person who messed up has to be every day all the time. No excuses. Rachel thought about this. Imagined herself reading his messages over and over. She would look at every word like a detective trying to figure out what really happened. If he took a time to write back or if things were quiet between them it would be really uncomfortable. It would make her feel unsure. Her heart would be working hard trying to make something good come out of a bad situation. The trust, between them might still be damaged, like soil that has things in it so it is hard to make anything grow.

It suddenly became clear to her that the world was not something she needed. She realized that she could do without that world. The world was not necessary, for her all.

The Confrontation Part Two

Things got really quiet between them when he finally showed up. It had been two weeks since she overheard that conversation, on the phone. Rachel had agreed to see him just one more time. He had been sleeping on a couch at a friends house while he waited. He was holding flowers and a letter that was just for Rachel to read. He looked really hopeful as he took a step forward. Rachel saw the hope in his eyes when he came closer with the flowers and the letter. He was holding the flowers and the letter. He looked like he really wanted to see Rachel.

He said that he has been going to therapy. He wrote down everything about why he did what he did and how sorry the man’s. The man wants to make this right. Rachel he wants her to give him a chance to talk to her about what the man did and how the man can make things better with Rachel. He really wants to make things right, with Rachel.

Rachel said “I want a divorce”, in a voice. She looked really calm when she said that she wants a divorce. The divorce is what Rachel wants.

Marcuss face just fell apart. “No. Please do not say that. We can make this right. I know it is going to take a lot of time. Marcus is sure that Marcus and the others can figure something out. Marcus really thinks that they can fix this thing.

Marcus I have been thinking about our marriage for two weeks. That is all I have been thinking about.. You know what I figured out? I have not been happy in our marriage for a long time. I just did not want to admit it to myself. Our marriage has been on my mind and I have to be honest with you Marcus I have been unhappy, in our marriage.

She was breathing out slowly. Her mind was going over a lot of ideas that she had been thinking about for really long days. Breathing out slowly like that was helping her to think about all these ideas. The ideas had been on her mind, for days now.

I have been feeling this way for a time now maybe even more than a year. The conversations that really mattered have stopped happening one after another. The feeling of being close, to you has disappeared it just slowly went away. Our lives have been going on at the time but it has been like we are strangers living in the same house just doing what we are supposed to do. I told myself that it is normal for couples to drift apart sometimes.. The truth is that you had already checked out and I was just pretending like everything was okay even though I was really just alone.

Her words came out fast before Marcus could even say anything. He tried to talk he opened his mouth. Her words just kept going and he got cut off again.

That time you cheated did not mess up something. It showed me what was really going on along: being married to me is not what you really want. You might not have said it loud but it is true. Being alone or starting over can be scary. But here we are, Marcus. This is not something Marcus would do. Six months of not talking and then making up lies? That is not like Marcus all. Maybe you. I did not notice.. Maybe I was blind to what was really happening from the very start. One thing is for sure: someone, like me needs more.

Marcus said “I can be better”. He really meant it. Marcus insisted that he would be better. Marcus said he would do whatever it takes. Marcus would even quit his job if that is what he had to do. Marcus and the people he cares about can move to a place and start all over again –

Rachel said “I do not want you to change for me”. Her voice was gentle now. I want to be with someone who does not need to change to be faithful, honest and present in the relationship. I want to be with someone who chooses Rachel because they genuinely want to build a life with Rachel not because Rachel’s convenient or because they are afraid of change. They should choose Rachel because they really want to be, with Rachel.

She got up it was clear that the time, for talking was over.

I have already filed for divorce. My attorney will be in touch with you. I am not interested in punishing my husband or making this divorce difficult, for my husband. I just want to move with my life.

Marcus felt a weight settle over him when Rachel turned toward the door. The words he wanted to say got stuck behind his teeth. They felt heavy and useless. The café was still noisy, around him. It did not care what was happening. All the promises Marcus had made to Rachel were now hanging in the air like smoke. You could see them for a moment. Then they were gone. Rachel did not look back at Marcus.

The Hard Reality of Being Betrayed

Honesty can be really painful. Rachel is a good example of this. What she went through shows that just trying hard does not fix trust that is broken. Being willing to try does not mean that things will get better. Sometimes what seems like another chance is the same thing happening all over again. The truth is that not all hurts will heal completely. Rachel shows us that honesty can hurt and it is a thing to deal with.

It shows up late, like betrayal. The smoke is still there after the fire has burned out. What seems to happen all of an is often just the moment when you finally see what has been broken for months.

After you catch someone in a lie you might notice that you did not feel much even before they started lying to you. The hurt you feel now makes sense because you were numb before it happened. The pain of betrayal is real. It is making sense now because you were feeling empty inside before the lie started.

What makes someone want to stay in a marriage? It is usually the people who care more about the marriage than the happiness of the couple. These people think that getting a divorce is, like losing. But sometimes leaving a marriage can be a thing. You realize that you are important and you decide that you do not want to give up your own happiness for someone else. Marriage is what pushes someone to hold a marriage together. People need to remember that marriage is not always the most important thing.

What made Rachel leave was not just the fact that someone cheated on her. It was what happened after that. It was like a curtain was pulled back. Rachel saw things she had not noticed before. She saw that there were gaps in the relationship that had been growing for a long time. Of talking to each other they were silent. They were just going through the motions of being but they were not really connected. Rachel felt like she was not speaking up for herself anymore. She was just being quiet and agreeing with everything. Staying in the relationship felt like she was losing herself on purpose. The affair did not end the relationship it just showed Rachel what was already broken in the relationship. The affair showed her that the relationship, with Rachel was already damaged.

Moving Forward

Rachel had just gotten out of the courtroom six months before. Now she was living in a place that was all hers. She started thinking about talks she had with her friends. These were conversations she had not thought about in a time because she was busy with her marriage. Her daily life was changing. It was not about Marcus anymore. It was about the things she wanted to do the choices she had not made in a long time. Rachel was thinking about what she wanted what made her happy and that was a change for her. The days were looking different for Rachel. It was all, about what she wanted to do with her life not just about what Marcus wanted.

Hard times came often. Some mornings were really quiet the silence was so strong that it felt like it was pushing on her chest. This made her question every decision she had made in the past.. There was one moment that she remembered very clearly. The evening when Marcus talked openly about someone else. He said that the promises they had made to each other were a burden to him. He acted like love was something that could be planned like a stop on his way to else. The memory of Marcus saying these things about their love stayed with her and it still felt sharp it did not get any less painful over time the memory of Marcus and his words, about love and their vows.

It would then come back to the woman. The reason why she chose the path she’s on. The path she is on is what she picked for herself. This is her reason, for picking her path.

Friends who know Marcus and Rachel well said that Marcus broke up with the other woman after he and Rachel split up. When everyone found out about Marcus and the other woman being with her did not feel right to Marcus anymore. Marcus would call Rachel sometimes. Say that they could try to be together again like they used to be. Marcus said that getting caught with the woman made him realize what is really important to him and that is Rachel. Marcus and Rachel were supposed to be happy but Marcus messed things up with the other woman and now Marcus wants to be, with Rachel again.

Finding her voice took a lot of time. What he really wanted did not matter much as what she needed. Finding her voice was important for her. That is what mattered the most. The things he wished for were not as important as the things she needed to be happy. Finding her voice was the key, to her happiness.

This story is about something that is hidden beneath loyalty. The trust between people does not break because of one thing. Because of what was already lacking. We should not be asking if we can forgive. Why we want to fix something that was not built on a strong foundation. Having a relationship is important but it should not be so important that it makes you forget who you are. Holding on to someone after they have hurt you does not show that you are strong sometimes it is better to take a step and think clearly. The way we let other people treat us says more about our character, than theirs the things we excuse are the things we expect to happen. Healing might look like distance not fixing things. Sometimes the best thing to do is walk. This can be a honest thing to do. It makes space for days that’re true to who you are, not days that are just okay because you settled for something. Healing is about being true to yourself and the life you want so walking out can be a part of that. It is, about making room for days that reflect what is really true not days that’re just a compromise.
