When Family Greed Met a Father’s Final Wisdom
The living room of the Harrington estate was really dark. Three people were sitting there not saying a word to each other. The Harrington estate living room was filled with feelings. People were angry. Wanted more and they had been hurting each other for a long time without saying anything. It was raining outside. The water was hitting the big windows, which was, like the fight that was building up inside the Harrington estate living room.
Sarah Harrington, the youngest of the family was sitting quietly on the edge of an armchair. She had her hands folded in her lap. Across from Sarah Harrington stood her brother, Marcus. His face was twisted with anger. He looked very impatient.
Their mother, Victoria Harrington was sitting on the leather sofa. She looked very calm. Her expression was as cold, as ice. Victoria Harrington was a woman who liked things her way. Sarah Harrington and her brother Marcus were waiting to see what Victoria Harrington would say next.
Two weeks had gone by since Robert Harrington, their father died from a heart attack. He was a real estate man who made all his money on his own. The family had not even had time to be sad, about Robert Harringtons death before they started fighting over the money he left behind.
The Confrontation
Marcus slammed a pile of papers onto the coffee table. The sound was really loud. It felt like a gunshot had gone off in the room. Marcus had a lot of documents and now they were all, over the coffee table.
Tell Sarah to sign the papers. The man was being very mean. His voice was loud and bossy. He said Sarah does not deserve the house. Sarah ever stayed in the house. The house belongs to Sarah. The man does not think so. He wants Sarah to sign the papers for the house.
Sarah looked up at Marcus her eyes were really. She spoke in a steady voice. “This is what my father wanted Marcus. He wanted me to do this it was my fathers wish, Marcus.
“Enough!” Victoria said, stopping everyone. Her voice was loud and clear. She got up from her seat and her fancy dress made a sound as she walked towards Sarah. “You were never really a part of this family, Sarah. You know that Sarah. This family was always something you were a part of, but not really a part of if you know what I mean Sarah.”
The words hung in the air they were mean. On purpose. This was something Sarah had dealt with her life. She was the daughter who was not wanted the one who did not belong the kid who was put up with but never really loved. Sarah was the daughter and that was a hard thing for her to accept. The fact that Sarah never quite fit, in was a truth she had to live with every day.
Sarahs throat got all tight. She did not cry. She learned a time ago that crying does not mean anything to these people. Sarah knew that tears would not help her with these people.
“I know ” she said softly her voice was so quiet you could hardly hear it. “That is why I did not say anything for all these years.”
Marcus laughed at that. “So why are you being so stubborn about this now? Just give us your part of what our family’s leaving behind. We will give you a something so you can get by.. The company and the houses and the things that are really worth something. Those are, for people who are actually family. The people who are really our family.
The Hidden Truth
Marcus and Victoria had no idea that their father could see them clearly. Their father, Robert Harrington had spent the years of his life watching his family and he was not happy with what he saw. Robert Harrington saw the way Marcus spent money like it was nothing he saw that Marcuss businesses were only still going because Robert Harrington was paying for them and he saw that Marcus did not always do the thing. Robert Harrington also saw that Victoria was a person she cared more about how things looked and what people thought of her than, about being a good person.
The important thing is that he had watched Sarah. He had been paying attention to Sarah.
Marcus was out having a time and Victoria was talking to people. Meanwhile Sarah was doing some great things. She got her MBA, which’s a big deal. She was working at a place that helps people who’re not as lucky as others.. Every single Sunday she would go see her father. She did this without missing a week. Sarah never asked her father for money. She never said hey pay attention to me. She just went to see him because she really loved and respected him. She showed up with love and respect, for her father. Sarah and her father had a relationship because of this. Sarah really loved her father. It showed.
On Sundays Robert and Sarah would go to his study. They would sit there. Drink tea. They talked about all sorts of things like business and philosophy and life and dreams. Robert liked these talks with Sarah. It was during these Sunday talks that Robert made up his mind about something. Robert and Sarah had good conversations, on Sundays.
The man rewrote his will. He made some changes to the will that he already had. The will is very important, to him. The man wants to make sure that his will says what he wants it to say. He took his time. Rewrote the entire will. The man feels better now that he has rewritten his will.
He only told two people about it: his lawyer and Sarah. He asked Sarah to promise that she would not tell anyone what it said until the reading. This reading was going to happen the day after they had this argument. He wanted Sarah to keep the contents of it a secret until then so he made Sarah promise not to say anything, about the contents until the day of the reading of the contents.
He had said to her “I want you to see what these people are really like one time ” and his weak hand was holding her hand. He wanted these people to show their selves completely before they found out the truth, about the people.
The Calm Before the Storm
Sarah got up from her seat slowly. She did not seem upset all even though people were being very mean to her. She looked at Marcus. Then she looked at her mother. Sarah wanted to remember this moment so she was taking a look, at everything. She was looking at Marcus and her mother. She was thinking about what was happening.
She said it again. “I stayed quiet ” she. Her voice was getting louder now. I stayed quiet when you forgot my birthdays. I stayed quiet when you did not include me in our family pictures. I stayed quiet when you told your friends that I was the daughter of the people who work for you even though the blood that runs through my veins is the same blood that runs through yours because we are family and that is what family is, the people who share the same blood and that is what makes us the same. I am your family just like you are mine. I stayed quiet when you said that when you said I was just the helps daughter.
Victorias face turned red. “How dare you” she said, her voice shaking with anger.
Sarah went on to say “I stayed quiet” and she meant it. Her calm behavior was really powerful. It was more powerful than yelling or screaming. She learned this from her Father. He taught her that being patient and having dignity is better than being cruel and greedy. Sarahs Father taught her that patience and dignity are stronger, than cruelty and greed.
Marcus took a step forward. He was being really aggressive. “This is just crazy” Marcus said. “Sign the papers. We will fight everything your Father gave you. We will keep you in court for a long time and that will be a big problem for you and it will be, about what your Father left you.”
Sarah picked up her purse. Walked toward the door. Then she stopped. Her hand was on the doorknob. Sarah turned around to look at them one time. She wanted to see the people she was leaving behind. Sarah looked at them. Then she turned back, to the door.
Tomorrow she said in a voice the lawyer is going to tell us what Fathers will says. The lawyer will let us know who gets all of Fathers things. You will find out who owns the house and all of Fathers money.
The silence that followed was really quiet. It was so quiet that it felt loud. The silence that followed was very strange.
Victoria asked what they were talking about. Her voice was a shaky when she said this. Victoria wanted to know what they were talking about. She did not sound very calm.
Sarah. It was a really sad smile. She said “Tomorrow you will find out that I own everything. I own the house I own the business I own the properties I own the investments. I own all of it. My father left all of it to me. He left me every thing that he had.
The Aftermath
The day Marcus and Victoria were sitting in a lawyers office. The office had wooden panels on the walls. They looked really surprised when they heard the will being read out loud. Marcus and Victoria just could not believe what they were hearing. The will was being read by the lawyer and Marcus and Victoria were, in shock.
Robert Harrington gave his estate to Sarah. This estate is worth a lot of money, over forty million dollars. Robert Harrington also gave something to Marcus. Marcus will get fifty thousand dollars every year from a trust fund.. Marcus has to do something to get this money. He has to take classes to learn about managing money. He has to have a steady job. Robert Harrington gave something to Victoria too. Victoria will get the jewelry that Robert Harrington gave her over the years. She will also get a bit of money every month.
The worst part was when the lawyer read out a letter. It was really sad to hear what the letter said about the person. The lawyer reading the letter out loud was the most devastating part.
To my son Marcus and my wife Victoria: I loved Marcus and Victoria. I could not trust Marcus and Victoria with the legacy I built. Marcus and Victoria valued money over being a person having a high status over being kind and being greedy, over family.
To my daughter Sarah: Sarah is what I wanted to build. Not a lot of money but being honest caring about people and being strong. Sarah should use this inheritance to keep making the world a better place like Sarah always does. You got this because of the kind of person you’re not because of who your family is. The things you do and the way you act are what matter that is what makes you special.
Marcus walked out of the office fast his face was very red and angry. Victoria just sat there she was not. For the first time she did not look like everything was okay. Victoria was usually very calm and collected. Now she looked upset. The office was quiet after Marcus left and Victoria was still sitting there trying to understand what just happened to Victoria and Marcus.
Sarah stayed in her seat. Then she started to cry. These were not tears they were sad tears. She was sad, about the family she would never have. Sarah was thinking about the family that could have been and this made her very sad.
The Lesson in Justice
Sarah did not feel the need to gloat. She did not want to seek revenge. Instead Sarah honored her fathers memory by using the inheritance exactly as her father intended. Sarah used the money to do things. She helped her nonprofit work grow. Sarah created scholarships for students who did not have a lot of money. Sarah also invested in projects that provided housing, for people who needed it. Sarah was doing all of this to remember her father.
Marcus was given a chance to work with her in the family business by her. Only if Marcus completed the things their father wanted. She made sure Victoria was doing okay even when Victoria did not want to talk to her.
Sarah learned something that really changed her life. She figured out that having power is not about having a lot of money or being in charge of people. True power is about being a person being patient and staying true to what the values of Sarah are even when the world is being really mean, to Sarah.
Her father had given her something special. He had shown her that she was right and that she was worth something. This made her feel good because someone had finally noticed how strong and quiet she was. Her father had given her more, than something that belonged to him he had given her validation he had given her vindication and he had given her the final proof that her quiet dignity was important.
The Deeper Truth About Family Betrayal
This story shows us a tough truth that a lot of people have to deal with. Family is not always about being loyal to each other. Just because you are related to someone by blood does not mean they will love you or treat you fairly. The people who are supposed to keep us safe are often the ones who end up hurting family members the most. Family can be very hurtful, at times.
This really shows us something. When people treat us badly we can still do the thing. We can choose to be dignified and not fight back. When we stay true to what the justice system’s all, about which is justice then justice will often come out on top. This is what happens when we stick to our values and justice is what we get in the end which is justice.
Robert Harringtons last thing he did was not to hurt Marcus and Victoria it was to give something to his daughter because she was, like him and had the things that Robert Harrington thought were important. Robert Harrington really loved these things about his daughter.
Educational Takeaway: This story shows us that our true worth is not about how others treat Educational Takeaway but about the kind of person we’re when things get tough. In our families at work and, in our communities good people may not always get the respect they deserve. Sometimes they are. Not valued or even treated badly for a while.. If we always try to be a good person and we are kind and strong people will eventually see our true character and appreciate Educational Takeaway for who we are. This is what really matters. Building a legacy is not about getting rich or being important. It is about living with honor and treating people with respect. We have to keep our dignity even when othersre not nice to us. The best thing we can give to others or get from them is not something we can hold in our hands. It is the example of a life lived with integrity and compassion. Building a legacy like this is what really matters. A legacy is, about living with integrity and compassion.
